This short course in How to Use Basic Fire Safety Principles to Protect Workplaces from Fires introduces the underlying concepts of fires and explosions and basic fire safety principles that can be implemented by organizations to prevent or mitigate the impact of fires. 

The course is delivered asynchronously and synchronously. You can view the video recordings at your own pace and if you are comfortable you can sit the exam to receive a certificate.  Premium membership is included with this course.

  2. Describe the stages of fire growth and the principles that govern the spreading of fires

  3. Describe the fire classification system

  4. Distinguish between a fire and an explosion

  5. Describe the behaviour of concrete and steel when subjected to a fire

  6. Describe the advantages, disadvantages, and ideal conditions of use for different types of detectors (smoke, flame, and heat)

  7. Describe various measures that can be used to warn occupants of a fire

  8. Distinguish between active and passive fire suppression systems

  9. Describe active fire suppressions systems including sprinklers, fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire hydrants, standpipes, and deluge systems

  10. Describe passive fire protection systems (fire door and fire walls)

  11. Describe mechanisms for the safe storage of flammable and combustible materials
